Known as the Driftless Area, this region's picturesque terrain is due to its having escaped the glaciers that flatted most of Illinois.  Within Jo Daviess County lies Charles Mound, the highest natural point in Illinois at 1,235 feet.

Jo Daviess County was named for Joseph Hamilton Daviess, prominent lawyer of Kentucky, United States District Attorney, and Major of the militia.  He was killed at the battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.  The County Seat is Galena and offers year round beauty and activities for everyone.
